That\u2019s why I\u2019m here to help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this section, I\u2019ll outline five common issues that small businesses face before we look at ways to address them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five common technology gaps that small businesses experience<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small businesses often overlook important IT processes meant to keep the company safe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many reasons for this but restrictive budgets and lack of awareness are usually the biggest culprits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can cause the following five technological gaps to develop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data backup and recovery<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your business\u2019s email system, applications, and even Excel documents all form part of your data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a key part of running a successful business, which is why it\u2019s so important to have measures in place to protect it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, many small businesses don\u2019t have multiple, encrypted backup process in place that protect them against digital attacks or data breaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they do have backup processes, these may be outdated or aren\u2019t tested regularly. This often includes your management service provider (MSP) and employees that have been part of the planning process.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure that your IT partner documents everything for accountability and management purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assess<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IT Service Provider or Technology Department <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should run regular risk assessments on the following systems:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IT network.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compliance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This helps them to gain a better understanding of your processes and where potential vulnerabilities lie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A risk assessment also helps your IT Department to identify and prevent existing gaps and threats that need to be fixed immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the risk assessment is complete, your MSP will create a report that details their findings. They might also suggest steps and plans for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as those three steps are completed, it\u2019s time to put your plan into action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your MSP should be able to assist with this and even recommend products or services that can help you achieve your cybersecurity goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">???? The stoplight approach<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a simple categorization method that helps you to identify the severity of each threat your business may face. Let\u2019s take a closer look at how this works.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red: Highest risk and vulnerabilities<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are technological gaps that need to be addressed as soon as possible. This includes any type of technological refresh or upgrades that intends to protect your systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you are dealing with a ransomware attack, it\u2019s critical to update your operating systems as soon as you can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red-listed vulnerabilities may also include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backups that don\u2019t function properly and need to be repaired.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unauthorized network users\u2014like ex-employees or third parties\u2014that may still have access to your data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successful login attempts by these unauthorized users.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsecure internet connections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of ways to document the operating procedures of the business.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow: Crucial gaps that are less urgent<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve identified critical vulnerabilities, you can move on to less crucial issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are technological gaps that should be monitored but can wait until the higher-risk problems are addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these gaps shouldn\u2019t be left out completely.
